For signs of the times, it’s difficult to beat “Becoming China’s Bitch: And Nine More Catastrophes We Must Avoid Right Now,” by former Goldman Sachs senior partner, Peter Kiernan. As a new installment in the “yellow peril” genre of fearmongering, it makes Michael Crichton’s “Rising Sun” — his 1992 novel about America becoming Japan’s bitch — sound evasively fictional, which of course it was, in more than one sense. No sooner had the idea of an omnipotent, inscrutable Japan taken hold of the media and popular culture, then the sun sank on the Japanese economic miracle.
