The federal, state, and local governments annually spend nearly $50,000 per U.S. household.

Since 1960, adjusted for inflation, total government spending per household has increased, on average, 2.0 percent per year.

Since 2002, total government expenditures per household accelerated significantly to 4.7 percent per year on average, even after the slowed growth post 2010 are included.

The data illustrate the continued absolute growth in the amount of government activities.
